Introduction to the Japanese Society of Periodontology

The advent of the aging society in Japan, which is beyond any experience in history, has emphasized the importance to people of chewing with their own teeth and enjoying conversation with others. This has been strongly recognized in the field of dentistry, and also by the general public. With this background, the Japanese Society of Periodontology has the aim of ensuring general health and quality of life by maintaining healthy teeth through the 8020 movement.

The Japanese Society of Periodontology is an academic association established in 1957 with the aim of assisting people with keeping as many as possible of their own teeth by treatment and cure of periodontal diseases. The total number of members in the society is 12,711 as of October 31, 2023. The members include faculty in basic and clinical departments in universities, practicing dentists, and hygienists. This reflects the diversity of the causes, disease conditions, and treatment methods for periodontitis. In addition, the society was reestablished as an NPO in FY2004 to allow it to function as an organization with greater utility.

The academic activities of the society include meetings held twice a year in spring and autumn, and clinical workshops that began in 1998. In addition, the activities of our members, such as their research achievements, have been presented at related domestic and international academic meetings. The members are also actively engaged in preparations of guidelines and textbooks, which provide the foundation for check-up, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontitis, together with related committees that are playing leading roles in this field.
